Sferracavallo (Palermo), June 8, 2024 – It’s once again the Norwegian flag waving at the top of the podium of the Melges 32 regattas in Sferracavallo.
As in the first Melges 32 Grand Prix of the season, which took place at the end of April at the Circolo Velica Sferracavallo racecourse, in the second event that ended today, the winning signature is always that of the owner and helmsman Lasse Petterson.
The Pippa 2 team once again proves to be the crew to beat and the fastest boat in any wind condition, continuing their winning streak dating back to the last two seasons with the titles of Melges 32 Series Champion in 2023 and Melges 32 World Champion in 2022. Pippa 2’s success was built entirely yesterday with a show of strength (three firsts out of three races) that broke every resistance from the opponents.
Lasse Petterson’s Pippa 2 (pt.11) therefore precedes on the final podium the Hungarian Farfallina by Arpad Schatz (pt. 17) and the German Wilma by Fritz Homann (pt.25). The top five are completed by the German Heat by Max Augustin (pt. 28, winner of the Corinthian class) and the first of the Italians RA Cesare dell’Aria (pt. 28).
Alvaro Marinho, Portuguese tactician of Pippa 2 (with four Olympic participations) – “The whole team has worked very well, confirming and improving race after race their standard of performance also thanks to the new sails. This has an even greater meaning in a fleet where the values are always very close. Now we look with confidence to the next events of the season, which will also see the arrival of additional high-level teams. Congratulations to the entire organization for allowing us to race on one of the most beautiful racecourses I have seen in my career.”
The Melges 32 class thanks the Sferracavallo Sailing Club, which in two dedicated events for the Melges 32 class has demonstrated the best organizational quality, confirming its racecourse (together with the onshore hospitality) as one of the best on which the Melges 32 class has ever raced in its long racing history.
Giuseppe Giunchiglia, President of Circolo Velico Sferracavallo – “We thank all Melges 32 sailors, bidding them farewell with a see you soon. For the young history of our club and in general for the entire territory, organizing two stages of the Melges 32 Series was an important moment to test our level of growth in view of many important sports events that our Club plans to organize in the near future, starting with the Nacra 17 European Championship in November. Thanks to all the partners and institutions, starting with the Municipality of Palermo, who have chosen to support us in our commitment, as well as a huge thank you to all the members and volunteers without whom none of this would be possible.”
The Melges 32 class thanks Circolo Velico Sferracavallo, Ubi Maior Italia, and Garmin Marine Italia
